Obesity, Junk Food, and my body

August 29, 2012

I love food.
My biggest addiction all of my life was Cheetos. Seriously even as a kid I always had a Pepsi and a bag of Cheetos in my hand.
Here is the ingredients

The first ingredient is Enriched Cornmeal: First, corn is bad. Period. It is bad for my thyroid, it also kills my stomach, and cornmeal is VERY high in sodium.

http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/cereal-grains-and-pasta/5694/2 – Check out this link for the nutritional info on cornmeal.  It also has vegetable oil in it which is also very bad for my already bad thyroid.

Here is a little info on another ingredient, maltodextrin http://www.whatismaltodextrin.com/ : maltodextrin is a type of carbohydrate with a high glycemic index. Although it is technically a complex carbohydrate, it is quickly digested and broken down into glucose. It’s effects are more like that of a simple sugar than a complex carbohydrate, leading to spikes in blood sugar levels and potential weight gain.

Side effects of maltodextrin and other sugars make weight loss more difficult.

For most people, the side effects of maltodextrin are the same as those of sugar in general, including the stimulation of the secretion of insulin, a hormone that has a number of functions, one of which is to increase the storage of fat in the body’s fat cells.

One of the challenging things about maltodextrin, is that people often consume it without being aware of it. It is commonly added to processed foods, and the nutrition information on the label usually classifies it as a complex carbohydrate rather than a sugar, even though it’s effects on the body are more like that of a simple sugar.

Evidence is mounting that excessive sugar consumption is a primary culprit in weight gain, obesity and a host of related chronic illnesses like diabetes and heart disease. It has also been suggested that sugar may be more addictive than cocaine.

Reducing sugar intake and breaking any addictions to sugar are in important part of improving your health.

Another one that I never knew was in Cheetos until RIGHT NOW is MSG!!!!! Here is a good article on MSG http://blog.healthkismet.com/msg-is-it-bad-for-you-why-how
MSG gives me the most horrible headaches…..

Lets also take into consideration the sodium! Oiy’ve

Enough about cheetos. That is just one example.

We have been home from our road trip for about 2.5 weeks. I have eaten only whole healthy foods for that time (one cheat day) and I have lost 9 pounds. I was to the point of having 2-5 migraines per week before I changed my diet and now for the past 2.5 weeks I have not had one. NOT ONE!! That is a huge deal for me.

I juice daily. I make all kinds of crazy combos, basically what I have in my fridge at the time. The fruit always makes the juice taste good and masks the veggie taste. I get all of my fruits and vegetable servings in daily now. I cut all grains/breads/carbs not for diet reasons like losing weight but for my thyroid health. They are all hard on the thyroid. I cut all refined sugar. I eat lots of veggies and fruits and chicken and seafood. That is it. Sounds boring but it is really rad and I am making new things!! Come on…..i juiced EGGPLANT the other day!! With pineapple and it was GOOD!!

So I just have to say that if you are suffering from allergies, headaches, stomach issues, the list goes on and on, try changing your diet! Try for one month to eat only WHOLE foods. What is it going to hurt to try? Nothing!!! Try it for one month and if nothing happens……then go back to your old lifestyle, but if you start to feel better, lose weight, and have more energy, then consider it a lifestyle change. You can do it! I will NEVER go back to eating a junk food diet. We all have days of slip ups or cheats but they should be few and far between. Try it and let me know how it goes!!

I still have a long way to go on the weight loss journey, but my focus is on being healthy and I know the weight will come off time time 🙂
